Congratulations to CMS flute student Ava Gilbert, who was accepted as a sophomore flute major into Interlochen Arts Academy, a world-renowned arts boarding school located in Michigan! This big decision was inspired by her summer camp experiences at the New England Music Camp in Maine and most recently at Interlochen’s own Arts Summer Camp, where she was surrounded by like-minded peers and immersed in all things music. Ava immediately knew that an arts and music-focused environment was where she wanted to be, and Interlochen provided that opportunity. Her musical pursuits began at the age of 3 when she started playing violin and then piano. Ava then played flute in the bands at Lyme-Old Lyme’s Middle and High School, where she thrived under the guidance of teachers Carrie Wind and Jacob Wilson, both of whom supported and encouraged her pursuit of Interlochen. Most recently, Ava studied under the tutelage of Community Music School Instructor Helene Rosenblatt, whom Ava credits for advancing her level of play and refining her tone and technique; and for thorough preparation of the audition pieces used for her successful application to the Academy. Congratulations, Ava! We’ll miss you here in CT and at CMS, but we know you’ll make us all proud!
